Between the two main developers Clay Schubiner and Alex Blickstaff, ten games have been released to the Xbox Live Indie Games Marketplace. Of these ten games none of them are recommendable. The trials and challenges involved with development tend to teach lessons and hone skills; “Copter Crush 2” does not communicate this.
After deciding to review the game the trial crashed on me. I downloaded the full game to give it a chance but that didn't go very well either. Playing the game revealed technical defects such as “Hangs.” Every level I played would Hang at least once. Also the main menu screen would frequently lag so much it was almost unnavigable. The Peer Review Process every indie game is subject to is supposed to catch defects and fail the games that contain them. Unfortunately this game slipped through the cracks.
The game is straight forward as a side scrolling shooter as you move to the right, shooting things above. You have various upgrades that affect your projectiles, movement and health. The upgrade descriptions try to be humorous, even telling you which upgrades are worth your time. My issue here is the upgrades don't do much. The “Cannon” upgrade seems to do nothing at all. You can see more shots on the screen but the enemies don't die any faster. The enemies could be getting more health but you wouldn't know because they all look exactly the same.
This leads to numerous aesthetic complaints. Not only does everything have the same image, but they are all poorly drawn. “Hand Drawn Art” sounds good but in this case was poorly executed. Some of the background art literally has scribble marks. Nothing is animated, it simply slides across the screen.
The helicopters you are supposed to be crushing move back and forth, slowly shooting, and if you let them build up, the game takes a turn towards random bullet hell. The bosses at the end of each level range from a giant clam-spewing crustacean to a rock throwing dragon--I think my nephew drew that.
The techno score in the background is very repetitive. Bosses feature an extremely annoying mixture of sirens and a mess of particle effects. The cacophony of klaxons will persist through the upgrade menu until you start the next level.
The only redeeming feature is an attempt at humor, I'm not sure what the joke is but I am probably laughing for the wrong reasons. Is this this game worth your time or money?
